Walk into any cricket store or browse online and you will quickly run into terms like Players Grade, Performance Grade, and Reserve Edition. For new cricketers and experienced players alike, these labels can be confusing. What do they actually mean? And more importantly, which grade is right for your game?
At SGM Cricket in Melbourne, every bat we make is graded before it leaves our workshop. This guide explains exactly what each grade means, what to expect from each, and how to choose the right bat for your level and style of play.
What is English Willow?
English willow (Salix alba var. caerulea) is the gold standard for cricket bat timber. Grown primarily in England, it is lightweight, fibrous, and uniquely suited to absorbing the impact of a cricket ball at high speed. The combination of its cellular structure and natural moisture content gives it a ping that no other wood can replicate.
Not all English willow is equal, however. Willow trees produce clefts of varying quality, and the grade assigned to a bat reflects the quality of the wood used to make it. Higher grades generally mean straighter grain lines, fewer blemishes, and a more consistent response off the bat face.
Understanding Grain Count
One of the first things you will notice when examining an English willow bat is the grain lines running vertically up the face. These are the annual growth rings of the willow tree. The number of grains visible on the face tells you something about how the bat will perform.
Bats with more grains (typically 6 or more) tend to come from slower-growing willow, which produces a harder, more durable blade with excellent longevity. Bats with fewer grains come from faster-growing timber, which is softer and more responsive right from the start. Neither is inherently better. The right grain count depends on your playing style and what you value most in a bat.
Performance Grade English Willow
Performance Grade bats at SGM use Grade 2 English willow. These bats typically have fewer grain lines and a slightly less uniform appearance than Grade 1, but they make up for it in raw power and immediate responsiveness.
The denser face and lower grain count means Performance Grade bats often ping harder out of the packaging and require less knock-in time to reach peak performance. For aggressive batters who want a bat that performs immediately and delivers maximum pop on the drive and pull shot, Performance Grade is an excellent choice.
Performance Grade bats are ideal for:
- Club cricketers who hit hard and want maximum bat speed
- Players on a budget who want serious performance without Grade 1 pricing
- Those who like a powerful feel through the hitting zone
- Batters who are comfortable with a blade that may have minor cosmetic blemishes
At SGM, our Performance Grade bats are available in weights from 2.6 to 2.12 lbs and can be custom-made to suit your style.
Players Grade English Willow
Players Grade bats use Grade 1 premium English willow, the same standard used in first-class and international cricket. These bats feature straight, tight grain lines (typically 6 or more grains across the face), a clean, unblemished face, and a balanced response across the entire hitting surface.
The quality of Grade 1 willow means it produces bats with excellent timing, a clean pickup, and a broad, responsive sweet spot. They require a little more knock-in time than Performance Grade to open up fully, but once prepared correctly they reward the batter with exceptional feel and feedback on every shot.
Players Grade bats are ideal for:
- Serious club cricketers and rep players who want professional-quality willow
- Technically sound batters who value timing and feel over raw power
- Anyone who wants a bat that looks and plays like what the professionals use
- Players who take care of their equipment and want long-lasting performance
Reserve Edition English Willow
The SGM Reserve Edition sits at the very top of our range. These bats are made from Grade 1+ English willow, hand-selected from the top clefts of each batch. Only blades that meet our strictest criteria for grain count (6 to 12 straight grains), minimal blemish, and exceptional natural hardness make the cut.
Reserve Edition bats are produced in very small numbers each season. Every bat is assessed and finished by hand. The natural ping on these bats is exceptional, and they require minimal knock-in to reach match-ready condition. If you are a serious cricketer who wants the finest willow available, the Reserve Edition is what you are looking for.
Which Grade Is Right for You?
- Performance Grade: You are an aggressive, hard-hitting batter who wants maximum pop and great value. You are happy with minor cosmetic blemishes in exchange for a bat that performs immediately.
- Players Grade: You want Grade 1 English willow, professional quality, and excellent all-round performance. You are a serious club cricketer who values timing and a clean, consistent feel.
- Reserve Edition: You want the best of the best. Limited availability, hand-selected Grade 1+ willow, exceptional finish.
A Note on Bat Weight
Regardless of grade, choosing the right weight is just as important as choosing the right willow. Most adult club cricketers play well with bats in the 2.5 to 2.9 lb range, but the right weight depends on your strength, technique, and style. SGM offers custom weights across all grades, so you never have to compromise.
