Walk into any cricket store, and you will encounter two types of bat: English willow and Kashmir willow. The price difference can be significant, sometimes $200 or more for comparable sizes. So what are you actually paying for, and which is right for your game?
What is English Willow?
English willow (Salix alba var. caerulea) is a specific variety of white willow grown almost exclusively in Essex, England. It has been the material of choice for professional cricket bats for over 200 years. Its cellular structure is uniquely suited to cricket: lightweight, fibrous, and flexible enough to absorb the impact of a hard leather ball at high velocity without shattering. The wood compresses under impact and springs back, producing the characteristic ping serious cricketers associate with a quality bat.
What is Kashmir Willow?
Kashmir willow is a different species grown in the Kashmir valley of India and Pakistan. It is harder and denser than English willow, and significantly more abundant, which is why Kashmir willow bats cost less to produce. The denser structure makes Kashmir willow more resistant to surface cracking in its raw state, making it more forgiving for beginners who may not prepare their bat properly. However, that same density also makes it heavier for a given blade size, and produces less of the spring and rebound that gives English willow its performance edge.
Performance Comparison
Feel and Ping
English willow wins clearly. The softer, more fibrous structure produces a responsive, live feeling on impact. A well-prepared English willow bat pings the ball away with noticeably more energy. This is why professional and serious club cricketers universally use English willow.
Weight
English willow is lighter for a given volume. Two bats with the same dimensions will differ by approximately 80–120g, with Kashmir willow being heavier. This affects bat speed, pickup, and feel.
Durability
Kashmir willow is more resistant to cracking on an unprepared blade. English willow must be properly knocked in and oiled before use; if skipped, it can crack early. A properly prepared English willow bat is just as durable through a full season. See: How to Knock In a New Cricket Bat.
Who Should Choose Which?
Choose English Willow if:
- You play regular club or school cricket and want the best performance
- You are willing to invest time in proper bat preparation
- You are buying for an intermediate or advanced player
Choose Kashmir Willow if:
- You are an absolute beginner wanting a bat to learn with
- You are buying for a very young child who will outgrow the bat quickly
- Budget is the primary consideration
Our honest recommendation: for any cricketer who plays club or school cricket seriously, English willow is the right choice. A Players Grade English willow bat at $699, properly prepared and maintained, will outperform a $200 Kashmir willow bat in every way and last for multiple seasons.
