Cricket Bat Weight Guide: How to Choose the Right Weight for Your Game

Cricket bat weight is one of the most discussed and most misunderstood aspects of bat selection. The goal is not to swing the heaviest bat you can lift. The goal is to swing the heaviest bat with which you can maintain full, unrestricted technique at full effort. That is your ideal weight.

Understanding Bat Weight Measurements

Cricket bat weights are measured in pounds and ounces. Most adult bat weights fall between 2.6 lbs and 2.12 lbs (approximately 1,180g to 1,330g).

  • 2.6 lbs = approximately 1,180g
  • 2.7 lbs = approximately 1,225g
  • 2.8 lbs = approximately 1,247g
  • 2.9 lbs = approximately 1,275g
  • 2.10 lbs = approximately 1,304g
  • 2.11 lbs = approximately 1,330g

Weight by Playing Style

Light bats (2.5–2.7 lbs)

Ideal for players who rely on bat speed, timing, and precise placement. Suit technically sound stroke players who drive through the off side or play a lot of cut shots. Also suited to female players, shorter players, and those returning from wrist or hand injuries.

SGM Players Grade 2.6 lbs and our Performance Grade bats are excellent options in this range. Browse Players Grade bats.

Mid-weight bats (2.8–2.9 lbs)

The most popular range for Australian club cricketers. A balance of bat speed and power that suits all-round batters playing on both front and back foot. SGM Players Grade 2.7 lbs sits in this effective zone for most club players. View the 2.7 LBs bat.

Heavy bats (2.10–2.12 lbs)

For powerful, physically strong players who can maintain bat speed with the added mass. T20 cricket has popularised heavier bats for the momentum through the hitting zone. Use a heavy bat only if you can genuinely keep full technique at pace; if your backlift shortens or your timing suffers, drop a weight.

The Pickup Test

Two bats with the same scale weight can feel completely different due to how mass is distributed through the blade. A high-spine bat will feel heavier than a mid-swell bat of identical weight. This is why experienced cricketers talk about pickup, the feeling of balance and momentum when the bat is lifted into the backlift.

Always test the pickup of a bat before buying. If ordering online, contact SGM and describe your game; we will match you to the right weight and profile.
